Event Details

About the Arts Education Summit

The Arts Education Summit brings together parents, students, educators, and community members for a day-long conference in order to build support for and understanding of the benefits of arts learning for young people. The day will include an inspiring keynote speaker, a discussion about arts education and advocacy with a panel of experts, educational breakout sessions, and more.

Summit Schedule 

9-9:30 AM – Registration (Attendees are welcome to arrive as early as 8:30 AM) and Breakfast

9:30-11:15 AM – Welcome & Eric Booth Keynote Address

     Eric Booth is a classically trained actor and highly respected teacher and speaker. He has held positions teaching theater at Stanford University and at New York University, and he has lectured, led workshops, and been a visiting scholar at over 30 universities across the country and at over 60 cultural institutions and schools.

11:30-12:15 – Lunch (Box lunches will be provided)

12:20-1:35 Breakout Sessions

     Based on the "Track," you register for, you will attend one of four breakout sessions:

1. Learning in the Arts -- A special session led by keynote speaker Eric Booth on the links between learning in the arts and workplace effectiveness
2. Quality Programming & Resources -- Resources available to artists and organizations and how to build (and grow) successful arts education programs. Presenters are: Elissa Ennis, Director of Education & Visitor Services, Long Beach Museum of Art; Megan Kirkpatrick, Implementation Manager, LA County Arts Commission; and Christi Wilkins, Executive Director, Dramatic Results
3. Arts Integration -- Practical ways to integrate the arts into the school day. Presenters are; Geraldine Walkup,
Visual and Performing Arts Administrator, LA County Office of Education; Robin Creason, LBUSD teacher; Patricia Kenzy, LBUSD teacher; and Lucy Underwood, LBUSD teacher.

1:40-2:10 – Panel Discussion

     Panelists include: Danielle Brazell, Executive Director, Arts for LA; Leslie Gibb, President, Long Beach PTA; Jack Mitchell, K-12 VAPA and Arts Media and Entertainment Consultant, Secondary Career and Adult Learning Division, California Department of Education; and Scott Ward, Executive Director, Armory Center for the Arts

2:15 – Raffle for attendees (must be present to win)
